Recent research into the preventive benefits of vitamin D has raised hopes that optimizing levels of “the sunshine vitamin” will contribute to better health status for all Canadians, including seniors.
Vitamin D was originally discovered in 1918 as a necessary nutrient to prevent the disease Rickets. In more modern times vitamin D has become famous primarily for aiding in the absorption of the mineral calcium. However, in recent years there has been an explosion of research linking vitamin D deficiency to a wide range of degenerative conditions such as; osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, different forms of cancer, depression, rheumatoid arthritis, influenza, prostate health, high blood pressure, diabetes, seasonal affective disorder, migraines and more.
Vitamin D is a vitamin that is found naturally in only a few foods. A person would have to drink ten tall glasses of fortified milk each day to consume minimum levels from their diet. It is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from food alone.
Because of this dietary challenge and a common lack of sun exposure Vitamin D insufficiency has become frighteningly typical. A recent study conducted by Statistics Canada found that one in ten, or more than 3 million Canadians, have such low levels of vitamin D in their blood, they lack adequate amounts for good bone health. (1) The study went on to report that two-thirds of the Canadian population have vitamin D levels below amounts recommended for cancer prevention. (2) Amongst the Zoomer population, those with insufficient vitamin D status were more likely to suffer from loss of balance, falls and fractures. (3)
Although there is debate in the medical community regarding optimal levels of vitamin D for disease prevention and optimal health, there are a few points of consensus to consider:
- Vitamin D is produced by your skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from natural sunlight. Natural sunlight cannot penetrate glass so you don't generate vitamin D when sitting in your car or home.
- Studies suggest that 20 to 30 minutes of sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. during summer months to the face, arms, legs and back without sunscreen usually offers enough sunlight for the production of adequate vitamin D stores. Sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater blocks the skin’s natural ability to produce vitamin D.
- Dark skinned Canadians are more likely to suffer from vitamin D insufficiency than their fair-skinned counterparts, as increased pigment in the skin acts as a natural sunscreen, making natural vitamin D synthesis more difficult. (4)
- Nearly every cell in the human body has receptors for vitamin D, and inadequate levels can disrupt the proper expression of hundreds of genes. (5)
- When vitamin D status drops dramatically low (less than 50nmol/L), bone health is severely compromised. (6)
- The anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral implication of optimal vitamin D status makes this an essential nutrient for healthy immunity. (7)
- Health Canada's recommendation for vitamin D intake for the Zoomer population is 400 IU daily. Health Canada advises people to take a daily vitamin D supplement, as following the Canada Food Guide will only provide 200 IU of vitamin D per day from food. (8)
- The Canadian Cancer Society recommends Canadians take in 1,000 IU of supplemental vitamin D every day. There is growing support for a daily vitamin D dosage of 1,000-2,000 IUs from all sources (including sunlight, food and supplements) and up to 5,000 IUs in the winter for those of us living in northern regions. (9)
Chronic vitamin D deficiency cannot be reversed overnight: it takes months of vitamin D supplementation and sunlight exposure to rebuild the body's bones and nervous system.
So what should you look for in a vitamin D supplement? Recent literature shows that most calcium supplements have too little vitamin D to be effective, so an additional vitamin D supplement will provide the greatest benefits. I recommend that Zoomers check supplement labels, as many contain vitamin D2, a synthetic form of the vitamin that is poorly absorbed in the body. Most-over-the counter vitamin D supplements and all prescription vitamin D supplements contain vitamin D2. I encourage Zoomers to look for natural vitamin D3 which is absorbed more easily, stays in the body longer and has a greater effect. Supplements that are made from organic ingredients, are sourced from food and that don’t contain binders or fillers, will provide the best results.

Healthy Tidbits
In this century, the world will have more people living into their 80s and 90s than ever before, with the number of people 80+ set to quadruple between 2000 and 2050.
Increased life expectancy is largely due to improvements in public health, and healthy ageing is linked directly to health in earlier stages of life.
Although it is natural for biological processes to decline with age, the rate at which our body’s decline is impacted by many controllable lifestyle factors such as how we eat, how we move, and how many toxic substances we are exposed to.
