Product Description:

Probiotics the "good bacteria" has been shown to treat and prevent digestive disorders, vaginal infections, and other illnesses. Acidophilus is often recommended as a safeguard during antibiotic therapy, which can suppress beneficial bacteria and trigger the growth of yeast infections. Acidophilus also offers general health protection. Several studies suggest that it functions as an immunity enhancer, and may suppress the toxic effects of carcinogens (cancer- causing agents). Specifically, acidophilus is most commonly used to:

  • Eases irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  • Controls diarrhea.
  • Combats vaginal yeast and other infections associated with Candida.
  • Relieves urinary tract infections.

Probiotics occur naturally in foods like yogurt and fermented foods; can be added to foods, or available as supplements. The normal human digestive tract contains about 400 types of probiotic bacteria that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healthy digestive system.

The largest group of probiotic bacteria in the intestine is species that produce lactic acid, of which Lactobacillus acidophilus, found in yogurt, is the best known.

Why the need for Probiotics supplementation?

A polluted environment, processed foods, chlorinated water, and heavy use of antibiotics and other medications can destroy the friendly microflora in our bodies and allow the undesirable bacteria to multiply. The imbalance of good to bad bacteria makes the body susceptible to intestinal toxicity, bloating, constipation, poor absorption of nutrients, yeast infection and other diseases.

Probiotics have been used as a form of treatment for a variety of gastrointestinal diseases including irritable bowel, lactose intolerance, traveler's diarrhea, and antibiotic induced diarrhea. Some experts believe probiotics to be more essential to human health than multivitamins – and there is much evidence to suggest that this could be true. Daily consumption of a well-studied strain(s) of probiotics is a simple, cost-effective way to protect your overall health from the ravages of the 21st century.

DDS® is a friendly probiotic bacterium you've probably seen on the shelves at your local health food store and is best known as Lactobacillus acidophilus. While there are many different varieties of beneficial probiotic bacteria being sold today, DDS®is considered to be one of the most beneficial because of its long-standing scientific validation and proven ability to colonize in the human gastrointestinal tract.

DDS® is known to work extremely well, which is why it is one of North America's leading probiotic lines and sought after by savvy, knowledgeable consumers who are interested in both value and quality.

  • Potent Formula: Each capsule contains 4.5 billion colony forming units of DDS-1 and other viable "colonizing" strains of human origin.

  • Superior Stability: Shelf stable, Live and viable for 2 years at room temperature. Freeze dried and nitro flushed packaging in glass bottles.

  • Superior Robust Strain: Survives stomach acid & bile for a healthy intestinal flora. Human origin therefore adapts to the human body easily. Ensures lower intestinal activity.

  • Superior Antibacterial Capacity: Produces Hydrogen Peroxide, Lactic Acid and Natural Antibiotics.

  • Clinically Researched: Proprietary formulas with clinically proven results, patented and trademarked.

  • Non-Dairy, Hypo-Allergenic, No animal contaminants, Non-GMO, No artificial flavors, colours or preservatives.

  • Fortified with prebiotics, fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

  • Developed by Dr. S.K. Dash, who has been the probiotic pioneer since 1979, served as Director of Food and Drug Administration for the state of South Dakota, Chairman of the National Probiotic Committee, currently Vice President of the International Probiotic Association and Scientific Advisor.Dr. Dash & UAS Laboratories were the first to introduce Quality Control Standard for probiotics which is now used around the globe, introduce Acid and bile resistant probiotics and manufacture Super Strain L. acidophilus DDS-1.

Probiotics Health Benefits:

Nutritional Benefits -
Laboratory and clinical trials have shown the importance of maintaining a healthy level of L. acidophilus for overall health.
Digestive Support -
DDS-1 produces enzymes, such as proteases and lipases, which can help with the breakdown of protein and fats. Acidophilus milk (both fermented and unfermented) containing DDS-1 was shown to have a higher protein digestibility than heated milk.
Against UTIs -
There is growing evidence suggesting that probiotics can be effective in the prevention of recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI). The proposed mechanism of action includes inhibition of growth and adhesion of pathogens to the vaginal and urethral mucosa (inner lining). In a case study, L. acidophilus DDS-1 with two billion viable organisms was given twice daily for a month and followed up with once daily to patients. It showed very positive effects.
Against Candida Albicans -
In a case study at a primary health care clinic, DDS-1 was given to 42 patients for a period of three months, 22 of whom reported improvement in levels of Candida albicans.
Against H. pylori -
More recently, researchers have reported the ability of DDS-1 to inhibit in a co-culture assay Helicobacter pylori, the bacterium thought to be responsible for ulcers.
Antibacterial Effects -
A compound with antibacterial properties is produced by DDS-1. Named "acidophilin," this compound was isolated from milk in which DDS-1 was grown. Other L. acidophilus strains did not produce significant amounts of this compound. Acidophilin fractions were concentrated and tested against some common food-borne pathogens where it was shown to inhibit Clostridium botulinum, Clostridium perfringens, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella enteritidis, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus faecalis. As an important follow up to this in vitro demonstration of activity, additional studies demonstrated the effectiveness of acidophilus milk on decreasing the carrier state and on the incidence and duration of salmonella and shigella dysentery in children.
Against Staph -
The ability of DDS-1 to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus was further demonstrated. S. aureus growth was inhibited in acidophilus yogurt likely due to a combination of activity of hydrogen peroxide, lactic acid and bacteriocin.
Anticancer Effects -
In a 1997 study of rats with chemically induced tumors, DDS-1 produced higher levels of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), both of which have potent inhibitory effects on tumor cells. A more recent study at the Federal Research Centre for Nutrition in Germany demonstrated that probiotics may have potential to reduce the risk of colon cancer in humans by inhibiting carcinogen-induced DNA damage. The anti-tumorigenic properties of DDS-1 were tested in an experimental model of chemically induced colon tumors. A standard diet supplemented with DDS-1 was fed along with exposure to a chemical carcinogen known to induce colon cancer. Tumor incidence was assessed at 26 and 40 weeks. At 26 weeks, the DDS-1-fed rats demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in tumor incidence. At 40 weeks, tumors in the DDS-1 group were fewer and smaller than in the control group. These results suggest that DDS-1 may delay the initiation process of chemically induced colon tumors in rats.
Lowering Cholesterol -
The cholesterol-lowering effect of DDS-1 was first investigated in 1978 by D. K. Sinha. He observed that adding four million L. acidophilus DDS-1 cells per milliliter of milk lowered cholesterol significantly.
Traveler's Diarrhea -
Going abroad in unfamiliar locales can introduce a set of bacteria your body may not be able to adapt to at once, triggering an onset of "the runs." To investigate the positive effects of DDS-1 on diarrhea, K. W. Senhert observed 70 people over a total of three studies who were taking two DDS-1 capsules containing two billion colony forming units (CFU) before breakfast a week before they traveled and during the period of their trips (to Guatemala, Mexico, and Nepal). Only two travelers reported digestive disorders—a remarkable number considering that the usual chance of occurrence is 20 to 30 percent.
Allergies and Eczema in Children -
Probiotics in general have been shown in research to reduce risk of allergies and reduce the symptoms. DDS has been studied in children and proved to be effective in controlling eczema, improving the child's and family's quality of life, and reducing use of drugs (e.g. corticosteroids).
Immune Modulation -
With 80% of the human body's immune-related cells found in the GI tract, the GI tract represents the largest immune-related organ in the human body. DDS has been reported in various research studies to influence some important immune-related cells and compounds, resulting in an improved immune response.

Healthy Tidbits

In this century, the world will have more people living into their 80s and 90s than ever before, with the number of people 80+ set to quadruple between 2000 and 2050.

Increased life expectancy is largely due to improvements in public health, and healthy ageing is linked directly to health in earlier stages of life.

Although it is natural for biological processes to decline with age, the rate at which our body’s decline is impacted by many controllable lifestyle factors such as how we eat, how we move, and how many toxic substances we are exposed to.
