Product Description:

Long chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids are essential for optimal nutrition and overall wellness. They reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and are an important factor in cognitive health and brain function. Since our body is unable to produce omega-3 fats on its own, they must be obtained through our diet. Krill Oil is a rich source of omega-3, as well as a naturally occurring antioxidant, astaxanthin. Similar to fish oil, Krill Oil contains a high amount of Omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexanoic Acid). EPA and DHA have been found to also improve cognitive performance in healthy subjects and to lower the risk of dementia.

Astaxanthin is famous as a powerful antioxidant, and rightly so. However, studies have also shown that it can reduce eye fatigue related to high screen time, preserve eye structure and function, improve sports performance, and contribute to heart health in various ways including maintaining healthy blood sugar and blood pressure. The newest realm of research on astaxanthin involves dementia, and several human studies have already found that astaxanthin reduces certain markers of dementia.(5-10)

Krill Oil is a unique Omega-3 fatty acid source, compared to fish oils or flaxseed.   Most of the EPA and DHA in Krill Oil exist in the phospholipid form instead of the triglyceride form as those in fish oil. This unique physical characteristic makes krill oil more readily absorbed and therefore more available to your body. Though linolenic acid from flaxseed oil belongs to the omega-3 family, only a very limited portion (less than 5%) can be converted into EPA/ DHA in humans. Therefore, the Omega-3 in krill oil is more efficiently utilized by the human body.

Importantly, Krill Oil is a sustainable source of Omega-3. Krill is a highly renewable resource, with the annual catch being restrictively controlled by international treaty. Zwell’s Krill Oil is harvested from the pure and unpolluted Antarctic Ocean and is therefore free of the contamination that comes with most other sources of Omega-3.

Zwell’s Krill Oil provides 230 mg of potent Omega-3 fatty acids in a safe and effective form.  Also, due to fast absorption, the EPA/DHA contained as phospholipids eliminates the “fishy burps” associated with regular fish oils.

Krill Oil is also very useful in blood lipid management by reducing total cholestrol, LDL cholestrol and triglecyerides and increasing HDL cholestrol ("good" cholestrol).

Human clinical studies of krill oil in arthritis sufferers are extremely compelling. In one study, a group received 300 mg/day of krill oil, and another group received placebo. At days 7, 14, and 30, C-reactive protein (CRP, a measure of inflammation) and the widely used WOMAC arthritis score were determined(3).

The WOMAC score assesses levels of pain and stiffness in patients with osteoarthritis. After just 7 days of supplementation, CRP was significantly reduced by 19.3% in the krill-supplemented group, while it rose by 15.7% in the placebo group. CRP dropped an additional 30% and 31% at days 14 and 30, respectively, in the krill arm of the study, while it rose by 32% at day 14 in the placebo group. More importantly for the arthritis sufferers, WOMAC severity scores dropped significantly on all three parameters: pain, stiffness, and functional impairment. At 30 days, participants reported a 38% improvement in pain and 39% improvement in stiffness (3).

In addition, Krill oil contains astaxanthin, a natural antioxidant.  Astaxanthin helps prevent the retina from oxidative damage and could potentially be beneficial in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD).

Healthy Tidbits

In this century, the world will have more people living into their 80s and 90s than ever before, with the number of people 80+ set to quadruple between 2000 and 2050.

Increased life expectancy is largely due to improvements in public health, and healthy ageing is linked directly to health in earlier stages of life.

Although it is natural for biological processes to decline with age, the rate at which our body’s decline is impacted by many controllable lifestyle factors such as how we eat, how we move, and how many toxic substances we are exposed to.
