* The first signs of a stroke include the sudden onset of weakness, difficulty speaking, vision problems, severe or unusual headache, and dizziness. * Adults under the age of 50 most commonly do not call 9-1-1 or their local emergency number at the first sign of stroke. * The youngest and the oldest stroke patients take the longest to get to the hospital, and women take longer than men. * Doctors recommend getting to the hospital within 3.5 hours of the first symptoms. * Dr. Michael Hill with the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada stresses, “Canadians need to understand that the clock starts ticking at the first signs of a stroke, and every second of delay leads to more brain cell death and greater risk of death or disability.”(1)
